2020 Communications Intern

 

Overview: The Communications intern is responsible for coordinating and executing the company’s social media strategy, working across key social media channels including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. The Intern will help CHILD USA reach more people through press coverage, celebrity and influencer outreach/management, and special events. This role offers the intern a total immersion into an innovative business. The successful candidate will work closely with key members of staff and external social media consultants to learn about social media, digital communications and marketing in the nonprofit sector. This role will be instrumental in increasing CHILD USA’s social media presence and gaining visibility for its leadership, research, and advocacy to protect children.

Responsibilities/Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Research and identify relevant celebrities/influencers to support CHILD USA
  • Brainstorm and execute unique strategies to work with celebrities/influencers to drive press and get their fans involved in campaigns
  •  Work with team to draft social media plans associated with those influential in the field of child protection 
  • Brainstorm PR strategies to help drive press coverage for our campaigns
  •  Maintain press records for internal use and to report to external partners 
  • Update the press page on the website
  •  General office clerical work and other projects that arise

What you’ll learn:

  • How to write pitches that people want to read
  • How to use etapestry, Twitter data analytics, and Facebook strategies to build outreach lists, and monitor media
  • How to create strategies to reach the most people interested in an organization’s mission and create the most impact
  • How to develop and cultivate relationships with influencers, partners, donors, and the news media

Qualifications:

  • Summer 2020 residence in the greater Philadelphia area
  • Must be able to work 30+ hours/week in the CHILD USA offices at the University of Pennsylvania for the duration of the internship
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Self-starter, ability to work well alone or with others
  • Detail-oriented and creative
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Familiarity with social networking sites and Microsoft Office
  • Interest in PR, social media, and partnerships (interest in the nonprofit industry helps!)

2020 Research and Development Intern

 

Overview: The Research and Development Intern is responsible for working with an interdisciplinary team to further CHILD USA’s research agenda. Interns will gain knowledge of the organization’s priority human rights issues and build skills in research, event planning, and fundraising to support the cause of ending child abuse and neglect. Interns will have opportunities to attend planning and department meetings with staff and to take full advantage of in-house trainings and briefings. This internship provides a unique opportunity for a student to learn and apply analytical and research skills in order to make a verifiable difference in the lives of children. In addition, the intern will identify, research, and develop strategies to liaise with corporations, grants, nonprofits, other businesses, and high net-worth individuals to determine potential partners for CHILD USA. The successful candidate will be an integral part of the team and have the opportunity to work with executive leadership to tackle big problems that have a major impact in the child protection arena.

Responsibilities/Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Creating research-driven content for CHILD USA’s blog/newsletter based on CHILD USA’s research agenda and priorities
  • Brainstorming and executing unique strategies to work with the team to drive development through grant-writing, public outreach, and corporate engagement
  • Coordinating support for local and national advocacy issues
  • General office clerical work and other projects that arise
  • What you’ll learn:
  • How to develop and cultivate relationships with influencers, partners, donors, and the news media
  • Introduction to public advocacy work and media coverage
  • How to identify and research institutional giving prospects and research, draft, and copy edit related grants and reports

Qualifications:

  • Summer 2020 residence in the greater Philadelphia area
  • Must be able to work 30+ hours/week in the CHILD USA offices at the University of Pennsylvania for the duration of internship
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Self-starter, ability to work well alone or with others
  • Detail-oriented; excellent time management/organization skills, ability to multi-task
  • Willingness to hustle and pitch in where necessary
  • Strong research skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated interest in news, politics and current events, and nonprofit work in the child-protection arena
